Terms of Service

Last updated: March 26, 2026

1. Acceptance of Terms

By creating an account on MyCampusClosets (“the Platform”), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Platform. We may update these terms at any time — continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old and enrolled at a participating college or university with a valid .edu email address. Accounts are limited to one per person. We reserve the right to verify your enrollment status at any time.

3. Account Responsibilities

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. You are responsible for all activity under your account. Notify us immediately at hello@mycampusclosets.com if you suspect unauthorized access.

4. Marketplace Conduct

As a user of the Platform, you agree to:

  • List only items you own and have the right to rent or sell
  • Provide accurate descriptions, photos, and sizing information
  • Honor confirmed rental and purchase agreements
  • Return rented items in the condition received, by the agreed date
  • Communicate respectfully with other users
  • Not use the Platform for counterfeit, stolen, or prohibited items

User Conduct

The following behaviors are strictly prohibited:

  • Harassment, bullying, threats, hate speech, or discrimination based on race, gender, sexuality, religion, disability, or any other protected status
  • Sharing, exposing, or threatening to expose another user's personal information (doxxing) — including real name, phone number, address, social media, or class schedule
  • Soliciting transactions off-platform to avoid service fees — including directing users to Venmo, Cash App, or any payment method outside of the Platform. Transactions completed off-platform are not covered by MyCampusClosets' damage protection or dispute resolution

Violations are handled through escalating consequences: first offense results in a warning, second offense results in a temporary suspension, and repeated or severe violations result in permanent account termination.

Listing Standards

All listings must meet the following standards to maintain trust and transparency across the marketplace:

  • Include a minimum of 3 photos of the actual item — at least one full-length shot, one close-up of the brand/care tag, and one showing any relevant details (texture, print, hardware)
  • All photos must be of the actual item being listed — stock photos, catalog images, or photos from other listings are not permitted
  • Disclose all known defects including stains, tears, pilling, missing buttons, broken zippers, alterations, or any damage — with a photo of each defect
  • Accurately represent the item's size, brand, color, and material — do not list a size S as a size M or misidentify the brand
  • Listings that fail to meet these standards may be removed without notice, and repeated violations may result in account suspension

5. Payments and Fees

All payments are processed through Stripe. Buyers and renters pay a flat 5% service fee shown at checkout. Closet owners have a commission deducted from their payout based on their plan: Free plan (12%), Pro plan (5%), and Unlimited plan (0%). Your card is authorized at checkout but not charged until the closet owner confirms the request. Payouts to closet owners are processed after confirmation. Your payment method is securely stored by Stripe for damage protection, late fees, and non-return charges as described in these terms. MyCampusClosets does not have access to your full card number.

6. Rentals

Rental agreements are between the renter and the closet owner. MyCampusClosets facilitates the transaction but is not a party to the rental agreement. Renters must return items by the agreed date.

Authorization Holds

When a rental is confirmed, an authorization hold may be placed on the renter's payment method for up to the item's listed resale value. This hold is not a charge — it is released 48–72 hours after the item is safely returned and both parties confirm the exchange. If damage or non-return occurs, the hold may be captured in part or full.

Condition Reports

Renters are required to submit in-app photo condition reports — once upon receiving the item and once before returning it. All photos are automatically timestamped by the Platform. In the event of a damage dispute, the closet owner may be asked to provide photos and evidence of the item's condition prior to the rental. Failure to submit condition reports may limit your ability to file or dispute a damage claim.

Rental Extensions

Renters may request a rental extension of up to 7 additional days through the Platform before the original return date. Extensions require approval from the closet owner. Each additional day is charged at the item's daily rental rate (total rental price divided by number of days in the original rental period). The renter's payment method is charged for the extension amount upon the owner's approval. Service fees apply to extension charges at the same rate as the original rental. If the owner declines the extension request, the original return date remains in effect.

Late Returns & Non-Return

Items not returned by the agreed date (or extended date, if applicable) will incur a late fee equal to the item's daily rental rate per day overdue. The daily rental rate is calculated as the total rental price divided by the number of days in the original rental period — the same rate charged for rental extensions. Late fees are automatically charged to the renter's payment method on file. After 7 days past the due date, the full current resale value of the item will be charged to the renter's payment method and the transaction will be converted to a purchase. The renter's account will be permanently suspended. MyCampusClosets reserves the right to report non-returned items to campus authorities and local law enforcement.

In-Person Exchange Safety

All item exchanges (pickup and return) happen in person on or near campus. For your safety, MyCampusClosets strongly recommends the following:

  • Meet in a well-lit, public location on campus — such as a student union, library lobby, residence hall front desk, or campus coffee shop
  • Exchange during daylight hours whenever possible
  • Let a friend or roommate know where you are going and who you are meeting
  • Both parties must confirm the exchange through the Platform — the renter confirms receipt of the item at pickup, and the owner confirms the item has been returned at drop-off
  • Never invite a user you do not know to your dorm room, apartment, or private residence for an exchange
  • If at any point you feel unsafe, do not proceed with the exchange — contact campus security and notify MyCampusClosets at hello@mycampusclosets.com

MyCampusClosets is not responsible for incidents that occur during in-person exchanges. By using the Platform, you acknowledge that exchanges are conducted at your own risk and agree to follow these safety guidelines.

7. Damage Policy & Protection

MyCampusClosets provides a damage protection process to help resolve disputes when items are returned damaged. Damage claims are reviewed and administered at MyCampusClosets' sole discretion and do not constitute insurance.

Normal Wear (Renter Not Liable)

The following are considered normal wear from a single use and are not grounds for a damage claim:

  • Deodorant marks or perfume scent
  • Minor pilling
  • Small washable stains (food, drink) that come out in standard cleaning
  • Slight bottom-of-dress staining from dragging
  • Dirty soles or small scuffs on shoes
  • Loss of 1–2 beads or minor embellishment shedding
  • Wrinkles, creasing, or minor stuck zippers

Damage (Renter Liable)

The following are considered damage beyond normal wear. The renter is financially responsible for repair or replacement:

  • Large rips, tears, or holes
  • Permanent stains that remain after professional cleaning
  • Removal or breakage of embellishments, ties, clasps, straps, or hardware
  • Broken heels, buckles, or structural components
  • Deformed or misshapen items
  • Cuts, burns, or heat damage
  • Irreversible color fading or dye bleeding
  • Biohazard contamination (blood, bodily fluids) — full replacement value charged immediately

Loss or Theft

If an item is lost, stolen, or not returned, the renter will be charged the full current resale value of the item (not the original retail price). See “Late Returns” above for non-return timelines.

Claim Tiers & Evidence Requirements

All damage claims are manually reviewed by MyCampusClosets. The evidence required depends on the claim amount:

  • Under $50:Renter's condition report photos and closet owner's damage photos
  • $50–$200: All of the above, plus a repair or cleaning quote
  • Over $200:All of the above, plus proof of purchase or documentation of the item's original value

Dispute Process & Timeline

  1. Report (within 12 hours): The closet owner must report damage through the Platform within 12 hours of marking the item as returned. Reports submitted after this window may not be eligible for a claim.
  2. Peer Resolution (Days 1–2): Both parties attempt to resolve the issue directly through in-app messaging. The Platform provides a structured messaging template to guide the conversation.
  3. Platform Mediation (3–5 business days): If unresolved, either party may escalate to MyCampusClosets support. The Platform reviews all submitted evidence, condition reports, and photos.
  4. Binding Determination: At the conclusion of mediation, MyCampusClosets issues a final, binding decision. If the renter is found liable, their payment method on file will be charged the determined amount. Both parties agree to accept the Platform's determination as final.

Note: Without condition report photos, the Platform's ability to mediate is limited. Users who do not submit condition reports accept the risk that disputes may not be resolved in their favor.

8. Cancellations

Either party may cancel a pending rental or purchase request before it is confirmed by the closet owner. No charge is made for cancelled requests. Once the owner confirms and payment is captured, cancellation fees may apply. Cancellation fees are determined on a case-by-case basis and may include a portion of the transaction amount to cover processing costs.
